Your Brain Shift Podcast Episode 25 Anthony Montes Interview

Keith Engelhardt Interviews Anthony Montes (Writer, teacher, actor). His powerful play focuses on his life and suicide attempt and the transformative results.

Anthony’s play “Outta the Darkness Into the Light” is a play with a purpose.

Born out of a 1983 attempted suicide, Outta the Darkness into the Light is a semi-autobiographical, one-man show that delves into the struggles of one soul’s own sense of light and dark, life and death, and connection and isolation.

Uniquely its own, “Outta the Darkness into the Light” breaks the fourth wall and welcomes the audience to participate in this immersive experience, for it is they who will decide this soul’s fate.

After his attempted suicide, the soul, played by Anthony Montes, seems to be stuck between worlds. While confused at first, an omniscient voice brings clarity and explains his plight. Anthony is instructed to talk about pivotal events from his life, and he is judged on them. The audience, the Deciders, is his jury.

Will he remain in his current state of limbo? Will he be granted a second chance to make a different choice, a better choice? It is up to the Deciders.

All of the stories in the piece are real events from Anthony’s life. Outta the Darkness into the Light is a delightful blend of shock, humor, and raw, palpable emotion. The synergy of these cohesive elements creates an important sense of hope, for a topic that surely needs it.

Bio:
Anthony Montes is a native New Yorker who has dedicated his life to the arts. He has been part of the film and theater industry for more than 40 years, and he has been teaching and coaching acting for over 30 years.

Anthony was drawn to storytelling from a young age, and he has honed that craft throughout the years. He has published 22 books and written 40 plays and 11 screenplays. Two of those screenplays, The Last Night Inn and The Last Train found their way onto the big screen, and Anthony starred in both.

While acting is his first love, teaching the craft is a close second. Anthony has studied with some of the most renowned and respected teachers in the industry, and he has been able to combine their methods, along with his own, to create the Montes Method. Anthony has been invited to teach all over the world, and he continues to do so to this day.

Suicide is a topic very close to Anthony as he attempted to take his own life by jumping in front of a subway car, July 4th, 1983. At the last moment, he realized he had made a grave mistake and was able to escape from the incident with only a fractured arm. Since then, Anthony has been dedicated to helping those in need and educating them to see that there is always a better choice.
Every 11 minutes someone takes their own life. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death in Youths age 10-14

Mental health issues plague society in varying degrees, but at its epicenter is suicide. On average, there are 130 suicide deaths each day in the U.S. alone.

Your Brain Shift Podcast Episode 24 “Are You Aware of Your Cognitive Errors? (Part 1)” with Keith Engelhardt

Keith Engelhardt shares a few of the over 100 Cognitive errors that can get in the way of our success and fulfillment.

We all have Cognitive errors that impede our success and sabotage us in many ways.

They are unavoidable. It’s part of being human. And most are learned early in life and are unconscious.

Cognitive errors are far too deep-seated to rid ourselves of them completely. And silencing them would require superhuman willpower, however that isn’t even a worthy goal. Not all cognitive errors are toxic, and some are even necessary for leading a good life. But, having an awareness of them and weakening them allow us to avoid self-induced unhappiness and failure.

If we could learn to recognize and evade some or our biggest errors in thinking—in our private lives, at work, or in government—we might experience a leap in prosperity.

Your Brain Shift Podcast Episode 23 “Don’t Find Your Purpose, Instead Be Purposeful.”  with Keith Engelhardt

Keith Engelhardt shares insights related to being purposeful rather than finding your life purpose.

An abundant mantra these days (especially from success gurus and life coaches) is find your life purpose as the key to fulfillment and success. This premise is one of modern-day American society’s most well-worn themes.

We see or hear statements like:

“The most valuable lesson is to find your purpose, follow your passions…. Life is too short to be doing what you think you have to do.”
“Follow your passions—life is for the living.”

What if they are wrong? What if we should be instead focusing on being purposeful in life?

In this episode we explore what works for the greatest fulfillment and success.

Two great reads regarding the impact of the Status Ladder and Status Anxiety are:

Status Anxiety by Alain de Botton and

The Broken Ladder: How Inequality Affects the Way We Think, Live, and Die by Keith Payne

Inequalities in power, wealth, and status skew our perceptions of reality.

Income inequality is higher than ever with no sign of letting up. It’s making us unhappier and unhealthier and tearing apart the social fabric of our lives. The poor are suffering from both poverty and inequality, and even the affluent feel and act as though they’re poor.

And yet, there’s still some hope!

According to author Keith Payne, there are things we can do to mitigate the negative effects of living with inequality.

There are things we can do to mitigate the negative effects of living with inequality.

There are two key things we can do to combat inequality: One, reduce it. Two, exert more control over the way we compare ourselves to others. To achieve the first, we need wholesale political change. That means organizing, voting, and putting pressure on lawmakers to create new redistributive policies that not only raise the bottom rungs of the ladder, but also, crucially, lower the top one. That, of course, is a long-term project.

In the short term, you can learn to recognize when you’re in the throes of comparing yourself to others and consciously decide to choose your comparisons more wisely. Instead of focusing on what you don’t have, for example, focus on what you do have. Or redirect your comparisons from other people to your own past – what is better about your life today than your life ten years ago?

Another change you can make is to your context; we tend to compare ourselves to the people around us. If your social milieu makes you feel inferior – get a new one! The most effective method though, is to take a few minutes to think about what you really value in life. Write down your answers. Are any of them about climbing a social ladder? Probably not. Consciously thinking about what really matters to us is an antidote to the unconscious default of looking to others to figure out how much we value ourselves.

Your Brain Shift Podcast Episode 6 (12/04/20)

Keith Engelhardt and Kevin McKinnon introduce the importance of culture for greater success, health and wellness, and fulfillment.

Culture definition: the customs, arts, social institutions, and achievements of a particular nation, people, or other social group. We have a continuum of cultures; our family of origin culture, racial and ethnic cultures, workplace cultures, societal and national cultures, even provincial and state or regional cultures. Each are containers that mold and makes us. There are cultures of inclusion, there are cultures of exclusion there are cultures of empowerment or oppression. Cultures that unit is or cultures that divide us. There are cultures based on common language. Cultures evolve; some more slowly than others.

Cultures at every level are environments and the according to Marshall Goldsmith the author of what got you here won’t get you there and the book Triggers, environments can be situational and most people go through life unaware of how our environments shape our behavior and our actions or influence our health wellness achievement and success or life fulfillment. Environments can shape us more than we shape them. Our environments are relentless triggers for how we behave or respond to the world. And he asserts if we don’t create and control our environment our environment creates and controls us and often as a result turns us into someone that we don’t even recognize.
